The Performance Group was established in Oslo in 1988. The company was founded on the principles around productivity and performance improvement and the first projects in Scandinavia were Performance Improvement Processes (PIP) for some of the large Swedish industrial companies and in the Norwegian health sector.

During the years up to 2000, the company developed both its project business and its consortium business. The projects developed from pure PIPs to a more "change process and implementation" focus - hand in hand with strong leadership development processes. The Consortium business expanded fully into a business in its own right, and also fostered the independent research activity in the company.

During the fall of 2001, Kjetil Ørbeck and Harald Korn bought The Performance Group and the company went through a demanding restructuring process during the winter of 2002. The two owners wanted to create a joint ownership of the company and shares were subsequently offered to the employees. TPG is now owner operated and all employees are shareholders.
